A building’s exterior is often the first thing customers notice when approaching a business. Clear, professionally designed signage helps people recognize your company, identify your location, and form an impression of your brand. For businesses competing for attention in Chicago, custom building signs can support brand visibility while complementing the architecture and appearance of a commercial property.
Choosing the right sign involves more than displaying a business name. Design, readability, placement, materials, and local requirements all influence how effectively exterior signage serves your business.
Why Custom Building Signs Matter for Chicago Businesses
Building signs help connect a company’s physical location with its brand identity. Whether a business operates from a retail storefront, an office building, or a commercial property, well-planned signage makes its presence easier to recognize.
Here are several reasons businesses invest in custom exterior signage:
- Brand recognition: Consistent logos, colors, and typography help customers identify your business.
- Location visibility: Properly positioned signs make it easier for visitors to locate your building.
- Professional appearance: A sign designed to complement the property can create a more cohesive exterior.
- Customer convenience: Clear signage helps first-time visitors confirm they have arrived at the correct destination.
For Chicago businesses, these benefits are especially relevant when a property is located along a busy street, within a commercial district, or among multiple neighboring businesses.
Types of Commercial Building Signs in Chicago
The right signage depends on your building, brand, audience, and installation requirements. Understanding common options can help you decide which design direction best suits your property.
1. Dimensional Letter Signs
Dimensional letters add depth to a building’s exterior. They can display a company name or logo using individual letters mounted directly to a suitable surface.
Depending on the design, these signs can create a contemporary, understated, or more prominent appearance. They are worth considering for office buildings, professional businesses, and retail properties seeking a distinctive branded entrance.
2. Illuminated Building Signs
Illuminated signage uses lighting to improve visibility in darker conditions. Depending on the sign design, illumination may be incorporated into the lettering or used to light the sign face.
Businesses with evening operating hours may benefit from considering illumination when planning their exterior signage. Lighting choices should account for readability, energy use, the building’s appearance, and applicable local requirements.
3. Storefront and Facade Signs
Storefront signs identify businesses directly on or above their entrances, while larger facade signs can integrate branding into a building’s exterior.
These options can help retailers, restaurants, service providers, and other commercial businesses communicate their identity to passing customers.
The most suitable choice depends on available mounting space, viewing distance, architectural features, and any restrictions affecting the property.
How to Choose the Right Building Sign for Your Property
Before investing in custom building signs, consider how the sign will function in its actual environment.
Start With Your Brand Identity
Your signage should reflect your company’s established visual identity. Use recognizable brand colors, clear typography, and an appropriate logo treatment.
Avoid including too much information. A concise message is often easier to understand from a distance than a sign crowded with text, contact details, and multiple design elements.
Consider Chicago’s Outdoor Conditions
Chicago experiences seasonal temperature changes, wind, precipitation, and winter weather. These conditions make material selection and installation planning important considerations for exterior signs.
Ask your sign provider about materials suitable for the intended location, protective finishes, mounting methods, and maintenance requirements. The sign’s construction should be appropriate for its size, exposure, and installation surface.
Evaluate Visibility and Placement
A sign should be designed around how people approach and view the building.
Consider:
- The distance from which customers need to read the sign
- Potential obstructions from trees, nearby structures, or architectural features
- Pedestrian and vehicle approaches to the property
- Contrast between the lettering and the sign background
- Whether lighting is appropriate for the business and location
Chicago properties can differ significantly in their building layouts and surrounding streetscapes. Reviewing the actual installation site helps ensure the proposed design suits its setting.
Planning Building Sign Installation in Chicago
Before fabrication and installation, businesses should check the requirements that apply to their specific property. Sign permits, zoning rules, building restrictions, illumination, and placement requirements may vary according to the sign and location.
Property owners and tenants should also confirm whether landlord approval or commercial property guidelines apply.
Planning these details early can help avoid design changes later in the project. It is also useful to establish the sign’s purpose, preferred appearance, approximate dimensions, and project budget before finalizing the design.
